Running in Indiana: 10K in Indiana Dunes National Park, at West Beach

Image
A short post to mark our third National Park in three days, this time in Indiana (new State for Agnès, while I spent a few days in Indianapolis visiting a client a few months ago). Not the most memorable park we've visited. First, it's a convoluted setup with park boundaries cut in the middle by a hideous steel plant, plus an overlapping State Park with its popular 3-dune challenge ! Second, it was Sunday and this narrow West Beach, is THE beach Chicagoans flocked by thousands on that special Sunday opening the July 4th Holiday week. Like there was no pandemic going on, but who are we to say this as we are traveling ourselves... Assuredly, NOBODY wants to go to the beach with masks on; I'd say we scored below 5% on the mask wearing scale, yikes! We were driving from Elkhart and hadn't realized Indiana was spanning two time zones , how weird. But that played beautifully as we arrived to the park just before the opening, at 8 am, to a wonderful sandy and deserted beach. I...

Running in Ohio: short run and hike in Cuyahoga Valley National Park

We mapped our cross-country road trip with two criteria: visit new states and new National Parks, ideally one a day. Of course, that's way too rushed to really appreciate the different people and landscapes across the US, yet, well enough in a time of a major pandemic. What have we seen in terms of safety measures after driving through parts of DC, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin in 3 days? I'd say, mostly an acknowledgement that mask is required, but that's it's an awful constraints. Most employees in service areas and restaurants wear a mask, but not all, and few pay attention of what people touch or pass to them, like items at a cash register. As for the patrons, it's a tale of two countries, like on social media. For instance, at gas stations, some would wear a mask when getting to the service area, but not when they exit, go figure! And I could fill a long post with so many anecdotes, would be so chilling. Overall, we often look li...

Touring DC with a Grandmaster: thank you Michael Wardian!

I love this title of Grandmaster or Grand Master, it denotes so much wisdom and skills! And I find it's a perfect fit for Mike. Not only does he excel at both classic and ultra running, collecting podiums from 5Ks to 100-miles or longer events, he also has a unique mix of professionalism with multiple notable sponsorships but also the boldness for attempting all sorts of challenges such as FKTs (Fastest Known Times) while remaining super cool and humble about his running. Then his age makes him a Master and he blows his age group, another objective reason for a Grand Master title! ;-) I first met Mike in December 2018 at the North Face 50-mile in San Francisco where Mark Gilligan and I paced him to the finish and actually helped save his day. Mike had missed a turnaround and lost quite a few spots in the mishap, still finishing in 9th (no, I don't have such a great memory at all, but that's the cool thing about having more than 600 posts to find these details back. Like t...
